About Hakuoki
Hakuoki (薄桜鬼, Hakuōki: Shinsengumi Kitan) is one of the most enduring and beloved otome game franchises in the genre's history. Originally developed by Otomate and released in Japan in 2008, the series follows Chizuru Yukimura, a young woman who travels to Kyoto in search of her missing father — only to become entangled with the legendary Shinsengumi, the shogunate's special police force, during the turbulent Bakumatsu period of Japanese history.
The game has been re-released, remastered, and expanded numerous times. The most accessible current versions for Western players are Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds and Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms on Nintendo Switch and PC, which together tell the complete story split across two chapters.
The Main Love Interests
Hakuoki features a cast of historically inspired characters, most of whom are based on real members of the Shinsengumi. Here's a quick overview:
Toshizo Hijikata
The stoic, serious vice-commander of the Shinsengumi. Hijikata is widely considered the game's "true" route and is best played last for maximum emotional impact. His relationship with Chizuru is complex, deeply felt, and unforgettable. He is a fan favourite for very good reasons.
Souji Okita
Charming and teasing on the surface but layered with vulnerability, Okita's route deals heavily with illness and mortality, making it one of the most emotionally intense in the game. His dynamic with Chizuru is equal parts banter and heartbreak.
Sanosuke Harada
Harada is warm, straightforward, and dependably kind. His route is often recommended to new players as a gentler introduction to the game's heavier themes. He is the optimist of the cast.
Heisuke Toudou
Young, enthusiastic, and deeply loyal, Heisuke offers a route full of youthful energy that contrasts sharply with the war around them. A great choice for players who enjoy earnest, spirited love interests.
Hajime Saito
Reserved, principled, and quietly devoted, Saito's route is beloved by fans who appreciate subtlety in romantic development. He is a man of few words, but every word counts.
Isami Kondou
The commander of the Shinsengumi, Kondou's route focuses on leadership, sacrifice, and the cost of idealism. His is among the more mature and historically grounded routes in the game.
Recommended Play Order
To get the most out of Hakuoki's overarching narrative, the following order is generally recommended:
- Harada (gentlest introduction to the story and mechanics)
- Toudou (builds on the world established in Harada's route)
- Okita (emotionally intense — best after you're comfortable with the setting)
- Saito (rewards familiarity with the broader Shinsengumi story)
- Kondou (his route recontextualises many earlier events)
- Hijikata (play this last — it is the emotional centrepiece of the entire game)
Tips for Playing Hakuoki
- Don't skip the history. Hakuoki's setting is richly researched. Even if you're unfamiliar with the Bakumatsu period, the game does a good job explaining context — lean into it.
- Bad endings have value. Some of the most memorable scenes in Hakuoki are in its bad ends. Consider reading them with a guide after you've seen the good end.
- Kyoto Winds first, Edo Blossoms second. If you're playing the split version, complete all routes in Kyoto Winds before moving to Edo Blossoms.
- Have tissues ready for Okita and Hijikata. Both routes are known to reduce fans to tears. This is a fair warning.
Which Route Is Right for You?
| If you like… | Try… |
|---|---|
| Slow-burn, intense romance | Hijikata or Saito |
| Bittersweet, emotional stories | Okita |
| Warm, optimistic romance | Harada |
| Energetic, youthful characters | Toudou |
| Mature, duty-driven narratives | Kondou |
No matter which route you choose first, Hakuoki is a rich and rewarding experience that has earned its place as a classic of the otome genre. Take your time, enjoy the history, and prepare to be emotionally wrecked in the best possible way.
