Collar × Malice is one of those otome games that immediately distinguishes itself from the crowd. Rather than a fantasy kingdom or historical setting, it drops you into a chillingly plausible modern Tokyo gripped by a terrorism crisis — and immediately puts a collar laced with poison around your protagonist's neck. It is, without question, one of the most compelling otome games to receive an official English localisation.
Story & Setting
You play as Ichika Hoshino, a young female police officer stationed in Shinjuku during an unprecedented series of murders carried out by a shadowy group called Adonis. After being attacked and fitted with a mysterious poisonous collar, Ichika is approached by a group of ex-law enforcement operatives who offer to help remove it — on the condition that she assists their investigation.
What follows is a genuinely tense thriller that unfolds differently depending on which operative's route you pursue. Each route peels back a different layer of the Adonis conspiracy, making the full picture only visible once you've completed all paths. This structure is brilliantly executed and rewards players who go through the entire game.
The Love Interests
Collar × Malice features five main routes:
- Takeru Sasazuka: A sharp-tongued, coldly analytical ex-cybercrime officer. His route is beloved for its emotional payoff despite a slow start.
- Kei Okazaki: Warm and outwardly cheerful, Okazaki hides considerable personal pain. A fan favourite for his complexity.
- Mineo Enomoto: Hot-headed and impulsive, but earnest and genuinely endearing. His route has some of the most dramatic action sequences.
- Aiji Yanagi: The mature, dependable team leader whose route explores themes of duty and trust.
- Kageyuki Shiraishi: Unlocked after completing other routes — enigmatic and essential to the full story.
Writing & Characters
The writing quality in Collar × Malice is exceptional by visual novel standards. Ichika is a standout otome heroine — she is competent, emotionally intelligent, and genuinely brave. She is not a passive observer but an active participant in the investigation. This makes the romantic developments feel earned rather than forced.
The male leads are all well-rounded, with backstories that explain (if not always excuse) their behaviour. Crucially, the game is aware of power dynamics and handles them with more care than many of its genre contemporaries.
Art, Music & Voice Acting
The character artwork by illustrator Teita is stunning. Designs are detailed and expressive, and the CG scenes are plentiful and high quality. The soundtrack complements the tension of the narrative beautifully, shifting between atmospheric thriller music and softer romantic pieces. Voice acting (Japanese only in the Western release) is top-tier — the cast performs with real emotional depth.
Gameplay & Length
As a visual novel, gameplay is primarily reading and making choices. The choice system is meaningful — wrong decisions lead to bad ends, so players who want the best outcomes are encouraged to save frequently or use a walkthrough. The full game, completing all five routes, represents roughly 40–60 hours of content.
Verdict
Collar × Malice is an outstanding achievement in the otome genre. It offers a compelling plot, a strong heroine, nuanced love interests, and an emotional experience that lingers well after the credits roll. Whether you're new to otome games or a long-time fan looking for something with real dramatic weight, this is an essential play.
⚠️ Content note: This game contains depictions of violence, death, and psychological manipulation. It is recommended for mature players.
